SUDDEN DEATH AT PORTESSIE.

MR. JOHN MCINTOSH.

The community of Buckie was startled on Sunday afternoon by the sad intelligence that Mr. John McIntosh, Shipbuilder, Portessie, had died suddenly that day. Mr. McIntosh had just returned from Buckie where he conducted the forenoon service in the Methodist Church, and while taking dinner with his family he fell away in his chair. Drs. Simpson & Hendry were hastily summoned but on arrival could do nothing as Mr. McIntosh had succumbed to heart failure. Mr. McIntosh, who was a native of Portessie, was a son of the late Mr. Wm. McIntosh boat-builder with whom he learned his trade. Deceased was in business as a boat & shipbuilder for about 20 years, during which time he built a large number of Zulus, & launched the first Steam Drifter on the Moray Firth, which was named the ‘White Rose’. For the past 12 years he has assisted his brother W.R. McIntosh, Shipbuilder, Ianstown. Perhaps Mr. McIntosh was best known as a Methodist local preacher, in which capacity he has visited all parts of the district between Inverness & Aberdeen. For the long period of 40yrs he acted as local preacher & was also a Sunday School teacher for 20yrs. Mr. McIntosh was Circuit Steward for 7 yrs, the highest office to which he could rise. He was known all over the North as an enthusiastic Methodist, and attended church meetings in Glasgow & other centers in the interest of Methodism. He was also associated with the Society of Friends & attended their meetings in England & elsewhere. Mr. McIntosh took a keen interest in local affairs but owing to business demanding so much of his attention he did not take much active part on Public Bodies. Some years ago he represented Portessie on the Rathven School Board being returned at the top of the poll. He only served for one term however. Craigenroan Harbour Scheme received his warm support & he was the means of getting a contribution of some 100’s of pounds towards the object from the Society of Friends. Deceased who was twice married was 67 yrs of age. There were two of a family by his first wife - a son & daughter - both of whom are alive, the son being in business as a ship repairer in Aberdeen. By the second marriage there were 8 children, by whom & his widow, Mr. McIntosh is survived, and to whom the sympathy of the community is extended at this time. Two of the family are meantime abroad. The funeral took place yesterday to Rathven Churchyard, and was largely attended. Rev. Messr’s Haslam, Portessie & Gough, Buckie, conducted the service at the deceased’s home.
